The other side of Kiko Vega: The Family

He has always led by example

Like any father proud of his daughter, Zaira and Zarema Vega talked about little-known aspects of their father. Qualities that will reflect in the way he will work, and what it will mean to his family if Kiko Vega becomes the next governor Baja California.

These faces are already familiar to Tijuana, because throughout the political career of Kiko Vega, Zaira and Zarema have grown under the public spotlight, but it has been in these last few months of campaigning where they have participated more actively. In recent weeks, they have assisted various sporting events and have reached out to the young people of Baja California to encourage all of them to exercise their right to vote.

"We have always been proud of my dad. Ever since we were little girls we have seen all of his hard work and goals," said Zarema Vega, highlighting the example that their father has been to both. "Actually I do not feel special, I look at it like my dad, as somebody who is very simple," said Zaira.

The time spent with special needs children has been some of the experiences that have impacted them the most during their participation in the election campaigns. Migrants, single moms and senior citizens had also caught the attention and problems they expect to change in the event that Kiko Vega wins the election and even through non-governmental organizations, thanks to the culture of "helping others" that their father instilled in them.

How would you describe your father? Zarema was silent for a few seconds and said it was difficult to summarize in a few words on how to describe her father. Her first response was the great heart of Kiko Vega and his dedication to helping others, and also emphasized his charisma and kindness, always thinking of others before himself. Zaira chose to talk about her father's humility complementing what her sister had previously said.

"For my dad to see that we are supporting him and working with him is our way of showing our love and that we will always be with him supporting him" Zarema Vega said. "I really get excited when someone always says that they are thankful for my dad because he helped them," said Zaira Vega.

When Kiko Vega's candidacy for governor of the state was made official, the first thing that came to mind of Zarema was that this was the person that the state needed, someone who had the experience, simplicity, intelligence and the heart to reach the next level. Meanwhile, Zaira was happy that their father could fulfill his dream, and that at the time, she did not think that she would be involved in the campaign as much as she has recently.

The sisters did not say if they would ever get into politics, but for now will only continue to support their father. They did mention that if the opportunity presented itself, they would like to engage in social causes, support programs for single mothers, childcare and others government assistance programs.

What will happen after the July 7? Zaira and Zarema were positive that Kiko Vega will triumph at the polls, so that after the elections it will become a time of much planning, preparation and work to be done. Zarema and Zaira added that they had never felt pressure to be the "daughters" of such person. Speaking in regards to various cases where spoiled children of politicians. The Vega Labastida sisters mentioned that their father has always led by example and have adopted his humility and simplicity.

These same values were the secret of Kiko Vega to keep his feet on the ground, which in addition to education and dedication he had to commit to since he was a young boy, Kiko Vega had to become the man of the family at a young age, due to the death of his father.

What advice would you give your father? Zarema considered that her father was doing the right thing and keep it that way. In relation to the criticism, she said that "he who owes nothing fears nothing," reason for her dad being calm and hopes that the people can notice that. Zaira added that she would ask her father to not change despite how difficult it may be to follow the same path.

Zaira and Zarema invited citizens to learn about the proposals and the trajectory of the candidates before July 7, when Baja California will elect a new governor, and expressed their willingness to share their father with all of the people so that the state could grow.
