Una Mordida Tacos is now visiting several Baja Californian cities with our host, Chef Danny Betancourt, and this time he went to Tijuana to Birriería y Taquería El Poblano #2 located at the Tijuana-Tecate freeway. On this occasion, he tried two tacos: a birria taco priced at $1.25 dollars ($25 pesos) and a flour cheese birria taco priced at $2 dollars ($40 pesos).
Flour Cheese Birria Taco
This is like a traditional cheese birria taco like in any other birrieria but what makes it different is that it is served on a flour tortilla instead of a corn tortilla. It has birria meat, beans, red sauce, coriander, onion, Oaxaca cheese, and served on a nicely fried flour tortilla.
The first thing that Danny highlighted was when he bit the taco, the tortilla was able to withstand the taco’s humidity. The cheese flavor was quite present during the first bite, the meat was quite soft, but Chef Danny thinks that it needed a bit more flavor and this was shown in the broth’s clear color. The sauce was not spicy but had a good taste since it had tomatoes and the tortilla being made of flour didn’t really do anything. The main star here was the cheese. This is why this gets a rating of 7.7.
Price: $2 dollars ($40 pesos)
Birria Taco
This taco has birria meat, onion, coriander, tomato sauce, and is served on two store-bought tortillas. Chef Danny would have preferred if they had been fried, for they were only heated up on a hotplate. The corn flavor was quite present, which means that the tortilla was well made despite all.
Our host stated, once again, that he would have preferred if the tortillas had been fried. Just like on the last taco, the meat was lacking in flavor and birria adobo condiments, which is why this taco gets a rating of 7.2.
Price: $1.25 dollars ($25 pesos)
