Montserrat Caballero signs declaration of Tijuana Town Hall as discrimination-free zone

The goal of this initiative is to promote a respectful treatment all people who come to the government offices of Tijuana

Mayor Montserrat Caballero Ramírez recently signed a declaration that states that the Tijuana Town Hall is a discrimination-free zone as part of an initiative presented by Enrique Lucero Vázquez, head of the Municipal Agency of Migrant Assistance (DMAM).

"This municipal administration decided to take matters into their own hands because if your municipal president suffers from racism, imagine people who arrive in certain conditions to ask for a procedure or support. That's why we named this town hall as a discrimination-free zone, because we know what you have experienced and what you suffer," the mayor said.

Lucero Vázquez stated that this declaration is meant only for officials of the Municipal Administration of Tijuana and its goal is to promote a respectful treatment of all people who come to government offices who request the services of the municipal government regardless of social status, physical condition, migration condition, gender, age, etc.

In addition, the official said, the goal is also for all public workers to become more sensitive regarding vulnerable people in order to tear down the bureaucratic wall that stops people from receiving assistance.

This declaration has 11 points and has been approved by the Judicial Council and upheld by the Mexican Constitution, international treaties, general laws, regulations, and codes of ethics.

Some of its main points are that people will not be judged by their appearance, race or ethnicity, nationality, age, disability, social condition or health condition, political affiliation, sex, religion, language or dialect, civil status, or anything that could threaten human dignity.

This document also says that citizens will be treated with dignity and respect, with no violation of their rights and opinions, as every person should be treated.

It also establishes that all municipal agencies will be forced to display this declaration and its points in a visible place and its content should be known and applied by the staff.
