David Saúl Guakil, Tijuana native businessman, said recently that in order to face the problems that the border city has, it is necessary to have an alliance between political and societal powers.
He said that never, in the 134 years of this young city, it has taken so long to move from one place to another, which translates into several economic losses in the productive sector and an unnecessary exhaustion for workers who lose a lot of time to go from their homes to their jobs and vice versa.
Guakil pointed out that, according to the latest report by the Mexican Institute of Competitiveness (IMCO), Tijuana is placed 5th among the 32 Mexican cities with the highest economic losses due to mobility problems with $2,774,592,144 yearly pesos. It is only bested by the Valley of Mexico, Monterrey, and the urban zone of Puebla and Tlaxcala.
IMCO itself - the businessman said - points out that the average economic loss in the 32 cities is $3,875 pesos per person each year, which is equal to 2.5 yearly basic baskets per individual and it is also equal to 28% of expenses that each home spends on children's education.
On the other hand, the national delegate of the Movimiento Ciudadano political party stated, insecurity is, perhaps above all, the number one problem faced by Tijuana natives. A total of 24,072 crimes were committed from January to June, 2023, according to a statistics report by the Secretariat of Citizen Security of Baja California.
Of these crimes, the ones with the highest impacts were, according to the report, homicides, with 943 cases in the first half of the year; 6 feminicides, 1,242 cases of malicious injuries; 7,433 thefts and robberies in all of their forms, and 3,088 property crimes. And the number continues to increase "despite official statements," David Saúl underscored.
Regarding the city's infrastructure, even if there are no serious studies, deficiencies are clear: collapsed or close to collapse roads and bridges; slow repairs; roads with potholes, despite programs by each administration to fix them, continue to exist; pipes with potable water and drainage systems frequently break and need to be replaced, etc.
David Saúl Kuakil reiterated that these issues in the city put at risk its progress, which is why it is urgent an agreement between the government and citizens, with participation from specialists on each matter, so that together they can establish concrete, real, and effective actions, away from politicking and focused only on looking for solutions.
He said that the city's progress cannot be delayed any longer because each day that passes with no solutions, puts at risk the natural opportunities that Tijuana has. Among them there are its geographical location next to one of the biggest economies in the world, its people, its educational centers, and its multiple companies from several different areas that already have an international level of inertia.
