In 1972, the family of Don Miguel and Doña María opened their first taco restaurant. Due to their success, they were able to immigrate, as many Tijuana families did back then, to the United States. This allowed them to expand their family business in foreign lands. In 1998, they opened their first branch in San Diego, California and 12 years later, they opened the another restaurant in Las Vegas, Nevada.
With over 40 years of experience, Tacos El Gordo has positioned itself as one of the best representatives of the taco in the country and one of the most famous taquerias in the city of Tijuana.
Approximately, every Taqueria El Gordo makes around 7,000 tacos every day. This production requires at least 30 workers. It should be mentioned that, in the United States, one of the main challenges for the family handling this taqueria is to find Mexican taqueros (taco makers) who want or can work considering their immigration status. Salaries in the United States are around 20 dollars per hour, which amounts to around 1,000 dollars per week.
The reason why they are worried about getting Mexican taqueros is because they want to preserve that original Mexican taco flavor. In addition, the people in charge have said that the taqueria’s work rhythm has not been accepted by foreign workers, who don’t know what it is like to work in a taco business. However, this job is not considered to be specialized work by the United States so it is impossible to easily bring taqueros from Mexico.
