On this episode of Una Mordida Tacos Tijuana, our host Chef Danny Betancourt went to “Tacos San Diego” located at Calz del Tecnológico 1300, Altabrisa, 22420. On this occasion he tried two tacos: a fish priced at $1.25 dollars ($25 pesos) and an Oriental-style spicy shrimp taco priced at $6.5 dollars ($70 pesos).
Fish Taco
This taco has battered fish, pico de gallo, cabbage, cream, and is served on two handmade corn tortillas. The first thing to note about this taco was its size which was described as “colossal” and “a harm to the jaw”; before he tried it, Chef Danny said that he decided to put aside the fried salted chili peppers, which had a very good flavor.
When he took his first bite, Chef Danny discovered that the tortilla had been heated on a hotplate without any type of grease such as oil or butter, something that did not alter its subtle maize flavor in the slightest. The batter wasn’t very thick or lumpy and enveloped a fish full of flavor, firm and with a good consistency. The combination of the vegetables with the protein created a good freshness making this taco not feel invasive, which is why this taco gets a rating of 8.9.
Price: $1.25 dollars ($25 pesos)
Oriental-Style Spicy Shrimp Taco
This taco has shrimps, cabbage, cream, cheese, an oriental salsa, and is served on two handmade corn tortillas. Just like the previous taco, it was also quite “colossal” especially because of the great amount of shrimps. The tortillas were also fried quite well.
When he tried it, Chef Danny stated that in the taco there were bursts of flavors both in the shrimp and in the cheese. However, the main star here was the sauce which, though it wasn’t very spicy, it had a very oriental touch similar to soy sauce. Despite this, Chef Danny thought it was a little too salty. He added that for those who like their tacos full of flavor and similar to junk food, this will be their ideal taco. This is why this taco gets a rating of 8.3.
Price: $6.5 dollars ($70 pesos)
