Bad Timing: Movility Legislation Approved by Mexican Congress

The left say this is a way to quash protests, the right say this is a way to guarantee use of public space for all

MEXICO.- This week, a new bill was passed by Mexico's Congress to modify articles 11 and 73 of the Constitution in a significant way. This modification would give all power to the government to guarantee mobility of the citizenry in public spaces. But critics believe this is a badly time initiative that is meant to quash the ongoing protests across the country.

"The government guarantees the rights of all people to have universal mobility, in conformance with principles of equality, accessibility, availability, and sustainability", reads the newly modified article 11.

To this end, a majority of the congressmen of the leftist party rejected these measures as they claim it prevents protesters from expressing in public spaces, and it seems as though public spaces will now be regulated and would be prohibited for use by protesters.

"This is not the right time politically to approve this legislation, and we should not contribute to the social tension. Mexico is confronting a national crisis, so lets be responsible and close off the temptation to repress social pacific protests that are currently taking place on the streets outside", said Aleida Alavez of the leftist party PRD.

Congressman of the right and far right, PAN and PRI, voted in favor of this initiative to protect persons that must pass through these public spaces on a daily basis, and in light of recent days where main thoroughfares have been affected by large-scale protests.

"Those who live and transit through the public streets have the same right to use it as those that wish to exercise their freedom of expression via protests" said a press release from congressman Marcos Aguilar, of the PAN party.

In summary, leftist congressman believe this constitutional amendment will only repress freedom of speech of protesters, and those on the right are trying to draw a line for public spaces to be used and enjoyed by all.
