Mexico orders investigation on US espionage situation

They ask for more than simple explanations

MEXICO.- Enrique Peña Nieto, the President of Mexico has ordered an exhaustive investigation to determine if the United States spied on mexican politicians during 2012, as well as the former president, Felipe Calderon.

This was announced yesterday by the government in a press conference by the Secretary of Government, Miguel Angel Osorio Chong, he highlighted that the investigation will have to determine "whether or not evidence exists that corroborates the current versions" of the supposed espionage, which also would have affected Peña Nieto when he was a candidate running for President.

It will also establish if "citizens or city officials back then" participated "intentionally or through omission, negligence or any other motive" in behavior which "would constitute some time of privacy violation of communication of the federal government during that time".

The general coordination of cyber crimes of the Federal Police and Investigation Center and National Security (CISEN) will be in charge of the investigation, and their conclusions should determine whether or not there was espionage involved and if so "they will need to hold those accountable".

"We will follow all lines of investigation we can" Osorio Chong explained, after reminding that the Mexican government "has expressed their concerns through diplomatic means and condemns this acts".

The investigation will join the "many diplomatic actions which have already been communicated today by our secretary of Foreign Relations, Jose Antonio Meade, from Geneva"

The counselor announced from Switzerland that he will call upon the United States ambassador in Mexico, Anthony Wayne, to "demand that he remain informed" as to let his government know of the progress of the investigation of the supposed espionage his country committed.

He also asked the United States Government to widen their investigation as well in regards to this espionage cases, which new information lead to Calderon (Mexican President from 2006 to 2012) being the objective of such espionage.

The German Magazine "Der Spiegel" published this information this past weekend, quoting documents from the former CIA technician Edward Snowden, that indicated that the National Security Agency (NSA) illegally accessed the email of the President of Mexico in 2010.

This information is now a part of that which was published in September -also part of the leaks provided by Edward Snowden- which indicated that Peña Nieto had been the subject of espionage in 2012 when he was a presidential candidate and later on elected president.

Osorio Chong highlighted that since the beginning of this administration this past December, "they have revised and reinforced security measures for voice and data communication, as well as software networks, coding and encryption systems used by the president and all areas of safety of the Government".
