Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda has officially launched the Escuadrón Violeta initiative in Tijuana, aimed at implementing preventive measures to support and protect women across Baja California. This specialized police group, already established in other cities, is trained to address cases of domestic and gender-based violence.
The governor emphasized that this security strategy seeks to benefit families in Tijuana by preventing and addressing violence against women—an issue that adversely affects both families and society as a whole. Tijuana now joins Mexicali, Ensenada, Playas de Rosarito, and San Quintín as the fifth city to implement this initiative.
"Today, the Violet Squad is officially active in Tijuana. Let’s remember that the Violet Squad is part of a broader initiative, the Violet System, which also includes the Women’s Justice Centers, Violet Transport, and the Violet Card. This integrated system was created to break the cycles of violence that many women face," Governor Ávila Olmeda explained.
The Violet Squad comprises 50 agents from the Baja California Secretariat of Citizen Security and the Tijuana Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection. These agents are trained in crisis intervention, victim and child assistance, and human rights, ensuring they can handle domestic and gender-based violence cases sensitively and effectively.
"When acts of violence occur, authorities will be there to support you. Women in Baja California are not alone. You have a government, a governor, and a mayor committed to your safety. We will do everything in our power to eradicate violence," she added.
Silvia Grisel Licón Casanova, Coordinator of the Violet Squad, highlighted the administration’s concrete actions to protect women since Governor Marina del Pilar took office.
"The Violet Squad operates by focusing on prevention, reaction, and raising awareness of violence. We strive to empower women by providing tools and resources while offering efficient, compassionate assistance with a gender perspective," Licón Casanova explained.
Mayor Ismael Burgueño of Tijuana expressed gratitude to Governor Marina del Pilar for her dedication to women’s safety, ensuring they can live securely and thrive.
"Without a doubt, the implementation of this program and the unification of criteria for addressing gender-based violence will strengthen our municipal efforts to ensure women’s and vulnerable individuals’ right to a life free of violence."
A formal signing ceremony between the State Government and Tijuana City Hall marked the launch of this strategy.
