Tijuana Enhances Historic Downtown with Plaza Santa Cecilia Restoration

These improvements aim to boost tourism, as Plaza Santa Cecilia attracts approximately 100,000 visitors each month.

The iconic Plaza Santa Cecilia, located in the heart of Tijuana’s Historic Downtown, has been revitalized through the efforts of the Secretariat of Tourism of Baja California's “Aid for Productive and Sustainable Inclusion Program,” overseen by the Destination Improvement Department.

Miguel Aguíñiga Rodríguez, Baja California’s Secretary of Tourism, explained that the enhancements, crafted by the talented plastic artist Enrique Chiu, include updates to 29 facades and 20 kiosks. Additionally, new letter signs have been installed in Plaza Santa Cecilia, underscoring its status as a premier tourist destination for both locals and visitors.

Aguíñiga Rodríguez highlighted that Plaza Santa Cecilia welcomes around 100,000 visitors each month. He emphasized that it is not only a key tourist attraction but also a cornerstone of Tijuana's cultural identity, serving as the gateway to Mexico and Latin America.

This iconic space, a symbol of Baja California’s hospitality and warmth, also celebrates the beauty and history of mariachi, a cherished Mexican cultural tradition. Aguíñiga Rodríguez invited all Baja Californians to rediscover the newly restored Plaza Santa Cecilia, a project brought to fruition by the state government's commitment to using tourism as a tool for social reconciliation.

The restoration event was attended by notable figures, including Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz of Tijuana's 25th City Hall; Deputy Evelyn Sánchez Sánchez, President of the Baja California Congress; Hugo León Valle, President of the Gastro-Tourist Cluster of Baja California; Enrique Chiu, the plastic artist behind the artistic contributions; as well as local residents and representatives of the tourism industry.
