Baja California Sur has recently topped the list of states with the highest wages for professionals and technicians in Mexico. According to a report by the Secretariat of Federal Economy and the National Employment Service (SNE), specialized workers in the region earn on average $13,823.89 monthly pesos which means Baja California Sur ranks #1 among all Mexican states.

Omar Antonio Zavala Agúndez, head of the Secretariat of Work, Well-Being, and Social Development, pointed out that wage competition in the state is particularly solid in industries like construction. For example, architects and civil engineers earn on average over $34,000 pesos, while builders earn at least $17,000 monthly pesos.

Construction is one of Baja California Sur's strongest industries due to the high demand for tourist projects -including hotels and condominiums- that have been boosted by infrastructure investments.

Another sector with high wages in Baja California Sur is the hotel and gastronomy industry, as salaries there range between 17,000 and 30,000 monthly pesos, depending on the level of specialization.

Regarding the workforce, the report reveals that Baja California Sur has an active economic population of 451,000 people with 41.1% being women and 58.9% being men. The industries with the highest concentrations of working people are sales, service, hotels, construction, and domestic services.

Challenges in BCS's labor market

Despite these high wages, the state faces some labor market challenges. The report shows that Baja California Sur has an unemployment rate of 2.22%, which means that around 10,200 people are still looking for a job.

Though the state has built a strong economy, the cost of living is something important to consider; as tourism grows in the region, prices of goods and services in cities like La Paz and Los Cabos have increased.
