In the last few months, an issue has caused concern among Americans living in Mexico: are they being deported due to gentrification? While Mexicans being deported from the US is a recurrent topic in the media, deportation of Americans from Mexico is not commented as much, though it has begun to gain traction in social media as this is, in fact, a reality.
Rumors on social media: what is the truth?
Recently, a TikTok video has caused a stir as it claims that "the Mexican parliament has voted in favor of deporting undocumented American foreigners." This video has obtained almost half a million views, has been shared thousands of times, and has caused many people to question whether this is true.
The video also says that in the last 60 days, more than 240,000 immigrants have been arrested in Mexico and 7,000 of them were deported, as it is said that American immigration is increasing inflation in the country.
There are deportations of Americans, but this is the true number
According to immigration statistics from the Mexican government, in the first few months of 2024, 127 American citizens were deported. This number, though real, greatly contrasts with the inflated numbers currently making rounds in social media where the alleged numbers were 240,000 arrests and 7,000 deportations. In addition, the idea that American immigration has caused inflation in Mexico has no real foundation, as it is purely a sensationalist argument.
Gentrification and migration
The issue of gentrification in Mexican cities such as Mexico City, Tulum, and San Miguel de Allende is currently a contested issue, especially because the arrival of foreigners, including many Americans, is affecting the cost of local life. Though there is concern about the impact on housing prices and other goods, there is no evidence that this has led to mass deportation policies against Americans.
Though these rumors have been making rounds in social media, official numbers do not reflect these claims. Though Mexico, like other countries, deports undocumented foreigners, the number of Americans affected is significantly lower than the one shown in viral posts.
