Construction of Otay II Port of Entry: What progress has this Tijuana-San Diego project shown so far?

When will it open? Here's everything you need to know about the delays and progress of this important binational project

The Otay Mesa II Port of Entry continues to face a fog of uncertainty due to the considerable delays that have occurred on the American side. Authorities still don't have a clear date of when this project will conclude as there has been no budget approval from the US government.

The Consul General of the United States in Mexico, Thomas E. Reott, spoke last month about the construction of secondary roads in the United States, however, he explained that the port of entry itself still needs to be built, as well as the buildings and a kilometer of road that will connect with these complementary roads.

On the American side, the roads and connecting paths started to be built in 2020, but it was until 2022 when the first stone of this project was laid. Though visible progress can be seen by drivers in the eastern area of Otay Mesa, the project continues to wait for necessary financing.

How's the construction going on the Mexican side?

The government of Mexico through the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) is making progress and expects to conclude before 2024 ends.

The governor of Baja California, Marina del Pilar, has pointed out that the US Congress has not authorized the necessary budget to continue the construction of the Otay II Port of Entry, which has caused delays in the project. However, she said that this was not a problem on the Mexican side.

Learn more about the Otay II Port of Entry

An interesting feature of the Otay II Port of Entry is that it will be the first one in Baja California with a binational toll system.

This system is designed to decrease waiting times at the border, which will benefit frequent travelers and the binational economy by improving border crossing efficiency.

The Otay II port of entry has the possibility of generating significant revenue with a projection of 8 billion dollars in 40 years.
