In a decision officialized this week, the Higher Court of the Electoral Court of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF) has confirmed that the Revolutionary Democratic Party (PRD) did not manage to get the percentage of necessary votes to keep its registration as a national political party.
The party was founded in May 5, 1989 in Mexico City by distinguished personalities of the Mexican left, among them, current president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
However, its disastrous electoral result signifies the end of a 35-year-old history for PRD, which was sometime ago, a key party in Mexican politics, governing nine states and Mexico City in four occasions.
The resolution of the Higher Court took place after finalizing 191 contestations presented by PRD against deputy and senator election counts.
The official results by the National Electoral Institute (INE) showed that PRD only obtained 2.43% of votes nationwide for deputies, 2.27% for senators, and 1.86% in the presidential election. These percentages are below the required 3% that is needed to maintain registration as a national political party.
PRD will keep its registration as local party
Despite disappearing as a national party, PRD will keep its registration as a local party in 13 states: Aguascalientes, Baja California Sur, Guerrero, State of Mexico, Michoacán, Morelos, Oaxaca, San Luis Potosí, Sonora, Tabasco, Tlaxcala, Zacatecas, and Mexico City.
This is because in these states, the party managed to obtain the required votes to maintain its local continuation.
The General Council of INE will issue in the upcoming weeks the official statement regarding the loss of registration by PRD nationwide.
