The motorcycling world is currently in shock and mourning after the death of Lorenzo Somaschini, a talented Argentinian driver who was only 9 years old.
The child was declared dead in the afternoon of Monday, June 17 at Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, after a serious accident occurred during a free training exercise during the Superbike Championship.
The death was confirmed through a statement issued by the event's organizers who voiced their deep sorrow and sent condolences to Somaschini's family members.
The incident happened during a practice exercise for the Honda Junior Cup where sadly, Somaschini fell and suffered a severe head injury. The child was immediately treated and then sent over to a hospital in an ambulance.
The category he was participating in gathers drivers between the ages of 8 and 16 years old in 160 cubic centimeter motorcycles adapted to each child's size.
Who was Lorenzo Somaschini?
Lorenzo Somaschini, born on July 17, 2014, was born in the city of Mendoza, Argentina, and was a young promising motorcycling star who had shown an early passion for this sport since he was 4 years old. His dream was to someday go to the MotoGP World Championship and become world champion.
With only 7 years of age, he was able to enroll at the DPR driver school led by renowned Argentinian driver Diego Pierluigi, who quickly recognized his talent and encouraged him to compete.
In April of this year, he debuted at the Argentinian Superbike Championship in the Junior Cup category where he won an impressive 5th place. The Honda Junior Cup 160 of the Brazilian Superbike Championship was going to be his first international competition.
