California, besides having several different urban zones, also has wide green areas full of endemic flora and fauna that have survived for many years. However, this urbanization has led to several counties and roads that put these animals’ lives at risk.

California begins construction of biggest wildlife crossing in the world

In 2022, the Save LA Cougars project, the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, was revealed, which is intended to be the biggest wildlife crossing in the world. Its goal is to save more than 400 species of birds, 50 mammal species, 35 reptiles, and thousands of birds, insects, and more. Of these, at least 50 of them are currently in danger of extinction.

The crossing was built near Agoura Hills in California and it crosses Highway 101 which, as it has 10 lanes, cuts the natural system like "chainsaw". Animals use this highway trying to cross to get to new land and many of them end up being ran over and killed.

This bridge is 200 feet long and 165 feet wide and, so far, a huge part of it has been built. Early this month, photos were shared regarding how far it's going, and one can see the shape that the crossing, which thousands of animals will use to cross safely, will have.

In March 2022, the project had 90.6% of its estimated expenses as it had raised $77 million dollars through 4,995 donors. All of this money, plus public conservation funds, has made it possible for this bridge to be built.

The recent sightings of wildlife in the area are strong evidence that this project will be successful and that it will help to conserve species. It is estimated that this crossing will be officially inaugurated in 2026.
