First Day of the Dead Carnival at Av. Revolución in Tijuana a success

The iconic Avenida Revolución was filled by thousands of families who gathered on Friday to remember their loved ones and enjoy Mexican traditions at the first Day of the Dead Carnival.

This was an amazing event organized by the Municipal Institute of Arts and Culture (IMAC), Zona Centro Delegation, merchants of the Benito Juárez market, the Seminary of Mexican Culture, and Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles from Caliente.

The Municipal Government presided by mayor Montserrat Caballero Ramírez, through the Secretariat of Wellbeing of Tijuana, conserves and protects Day of the Dead traditions, making sure that they are taught to new generations.

Director of IMAC, Jesús Emmanuel Villalba León, explained that the business sector, florists of 5th Street, and municipal agencies (IMCAD, IMMUJER, DESOM, DMAM) all participated for the first time here. They decorated more than 40 floats with Catrinas, skulls, and cempasúchil flowers so that they could travel through Avenida Revolución for more than an hour.

Villalba León stated:

This mass activity must be embraced by Tijuana natives so that every year it is bigger, and more people participate. That way it can become more creative, and of course, it will show the vitality of the culture that connects the past with the present.

He said that the parade started at "Benito Juárez" market until it reached the Monumental Clock/Arch where a stage had been set. More than 20 exhibitors offered Mexican snacks, Day of the Dead bread, souvenirs, and makeup.

The artistic program consisted of Ópera de Tijuana with Orquesta del Refugio, Arabic Dances by Lily Brago, the folkloric group “Tleyolt”, “La Viejada”, Sones of Xantolo, calaveritas performance by “Las catrinas” from Alianza de Mujeres A.C., dance by Stephanie Abigail, regional music singers Maya Zamora, Paulina Lozano, Kenia Mejía, folkloric ballet “Xochipilli”, dancing workshop by CETis No. 58, Fusion Dance school, Dan García, Roxy Ruiz, and competitions from Xolos of Tijuana.
