During a meeting led by the governor of Baja California, Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, and US General Consul in Tijuana, Thomas E. Reott, both officials discussed coordination between Mexican and US authorities regarding the strengthening of security and efficiency in the state’s border crossings.
At this meeting, the state governor and members of the Baja Californian government cabinet analyzed the implications of the conclusion of Title 42 regarding immigration matters, and proposed a series of agreements in order to provide security to immigrant people and society at large in border areas.
In addition, at this meeting, current issues regarding immigration in Baja California were addressed as well as actions by the three levels of government to assist people through several tools, such as the US government platform CBP One, where immigrants can begin their processes with US immigration authorities.
They also spoke about the streamlining of asylum processes for vulnerable immigrant families and the unification of the ports of entry in order to request political asylum in the United States in the cities of Mexicali and Tijuana. In addition, there’s also the execution of joint strategies to give security to areas next to the international border.
At this meeting, the following people were present: Secretary of the Interior of Baja California, Catalino Zavala Márquez; Secretary of Economy and Innovation, Kurt Ignacio Honold Morales; Secretary of Citizen Security of Baja California, general Leopoldo Tizoc Aguilar Durán; commander of the Second Military Region, General Víctor Hugo Aguirre Serna; state coordinator of the National Guard, Jorge Enrique Martínez Medina; the head of the Representation Office of the National Institute of Migration (INM), Manuel Marín Salazar; and Subsecretary of Immigration Issues of Baja California, Adriana Minerva Espinoza Nolasco.
US authorities present were Manuel Padilla, of Customs and Border Patrol; head of Border Patrol, Gregory Bovino; head of Exterior Operations at CBP, Jose Gardea; head of Field Operations, Sidney Aki; CBP adjunct in the region, Daniel Sanchez; CBP representative for the states of California and Arizona, Moisés Castillo; and National Security Investigations Agency adjunct, José González.
