Transpeninsular train project from Tijuana to Los Cabos will be presented in February

The project that is looking to touristically link the Baja California peninsula will be built by private investment

The peninsular train project that is looking to connect Tijuana with Cabo San Lucas will be presented in February, 2023.

The train that will link Baja California with Baja California Sur (BCS) will be built with a budget by private investors, which means it won’t compromise the economy of either state. The set budget will be 140 billion pesos and it will be finished in around 4 to 5 years.

So far, it is still unknown which companies will be economically involved in the project, though MORENA federal representative, Alfredo Porras Domínguez, has said that the business sector is already working on everything related to the environmental impact that could occur in the region due to how long the railway will be. According to the congressman, estimated expenses to cover all environmental needs are 400 million pesos.

Among the investments, the construction of three electric power plants is expected, as they will be the ones in charge of generating clean energy, so that the peninsular train can move. This is according to media outlet Tribuna de la Paz.

For his part, the president of Confederación Patronal de la República Mexicana (COPARMEX) in Baja California Sur, Gustavo Díaz Tronco, stated that this new railway project contemplates not only the tourism sector, but also the distribution of goods in the state. He said that due to the growth the region has had, routes providing BCS have been overwhelmed by demand.

Recently, BCS had million-dollar losses after ports and airports in Sinaloa were closed momentarily, due to the Culiacanazo. This was reflected in 35% of products consumed. BCS depends directly on marine routes to transport merchandise that arrives from Sinaloa and Sonora. That’s why it is urgent to expand the trade routes reaching the state.

It is expected that this route, besides connecting Baja California with BCS, can also be joined with railways in San Diego. In addition, it is also expected that this new project links with just one route Baja California with the state of Chiapas.

The project will be presented in February, 2023, although the date hasn’t been revealed yet. The railway is expected to cover 1,700 kilometers (1,056 miles) that will cost 140 billion pesos in a time period of around 4 to 5 years.
