Governor Marina del Pilar celebrated the announcement today from the National Palace regarding the minimum wage increase in Mexico which will take effect on January 1st, 2023, thanks to a consensus from the country’s business organizations. The increase will be by 20%.
Marina del Pilar explained that, with this increase, the minimum wage in Baja California is equal to the ones in other border states as it goes from $260 to $312 pesos per day. In the rest of the country, it will go from $172 to $207 pesos, which represents an essential benefit for families’ economies.
Marina del Pilar emphasized that, according to data from the National Council of the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (CONEVAL), Baja California is among the five states in Mexico with the least amount of food poverty, which means that wages have a greater capacity to acquire basic basket products.
The President’s decision, which was made in agreement with businessmen, will keep Baja California as one of the states with the greatest purchase power, which means a better quality of life for people and access to better services. This is why this measure is fulfilling the economic goals of this administration included in the State Development Plan.
"Baja Californian families are in a good place according to nationwide quality of life indicators, which is why increasing the minimum wage means not only more income due to their work, but a favorable calculation regarding their benefits, which will make a difference for all people,” she underscored.
The governor highlighted this presidential decision as an example of the social vision of the president, and the Fourth Transformation, who has betted on improving the conditions of the working class since his six-year term began in 2018. She also congratulated Andrés Manuel López Obrador for the fourth anniversary of his administration.
In addition, she said that the minimum wage increase will continue to empower all workers, which means they will have access to a better quality of life for them and their loved ones.
“Social justice is one of the foundations of the Fourth Transformation and it must be a fundamental pillar for any government, which is why I want to recognize the willingness of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for making this request by workers a reality as they will now see that their efforts are being compensated better,” she stated.
