San Ysidro Port of Entry could open more booths depending on pilot program’s success

Today, November 15, 2022, the pilot program at the San Ysidro port of entry began, whose goal is to speed up the traffic flow through preventive checkup filters.

During the presentation and start of the pilot program, the Secretary of the Interior of Baja California said that the presence of Mexican authorities during this binational strategy to speed up border crossings will look to, more than anything, maintain order and security during border crossing periods. He reiterated that this is a pilot plan and that its results will be reviewed for future modifications.

As such, when he was asked about how long this project was going to last, he said that it all depends on the results, which are expected to be favorable. During his speech, he reiterated the importance of guaranteeing security during border crossings, adding that this security will cause more crossing booths to be opened.

For his part, Carlos González Gutiérrez, General Consul of Mexico in San Diego explained that Mexican authorities will check the Sentri and Ready Lane lines which will be used by civilians with proper documentation. He said that this process is similar to the one that takes place in airports, where the proper documentation is also needed to board the airplane.

It is still not clear if the plan will be able to accomplish the goal of speeding up border crossings and as such, the plan’s ultimate goal is still up in the air. This is because the actions that CBP agents carry out will all depend on the efficiency of the actions by Mexican authorities.

During this conference, authorities from the National Institute of Migration (INAMI), municipal police officers, and National Guard members were present.

During the holiday season, border crossings lines can end up lasting from five to eight hours, just to cross. Negotiations to improve border crossings should include more supportive actions by U.S. authorities. The pilot program that begins today on November 15, 2022 will end on January 15, 2022.
