Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents managed to seize more than 2 tons of narcotics that were being smuggled into the United States. This occurred within a span of 2 days and both incidents took place at the Otay Mesa port of entry, between the cities of Tijuana and San Diego.

On October 20th, the first seizure occurred after a tractor trailer with a shipment of green onions or chives was sent to secondary inspection along with its driver, a 28-year-old man.

During its inspection, a package disguised as scallions was found among these vegetables. In total 183 packages, weighing approximately 1,528.99 pounds and an estimated street value of $3.3 million dollars were found after an even more thorough inspection.

The second seizure took place on October 22 approximately at 10:50 AM where CBP sent a 29-year-old driver and a truck with a shipment of electronics to secondary inspection. There they discovered anomalies which is why the canine team was used for this inspection; they detected something in the front part of the truck.

When inspecting this area, the canine agents detected 195 packages of methamphetamine and 75 packages of cocaine concealed in a hidden wall, which is not factory-built. The shipment weighed approximately 1,992.54 pounds of methamphetamine and 1,037.27 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of $24.2 million dollars.

Both drivers were arrested for alleged narcotic smuggling attempts. They were turned over to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE); the trucks and the narcotics were also seized.
