Marina del Pilar strengthens assistance for the women of Baja California

The comprehensive model at CEJUM led by the governor is showing results that are looking to strengthen support for victims of violence

Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, governor of Baja California, reiterated her commitment to implement policies to prevent and eradicate violence against women. The governor stated that the budget of the Center for the Justice of Women (CEJUM) was increased by 213% in 2022, reaching $15.7 million pesos.

The governor of Baja California said that the Comprehensive Attention Unit was installed at CEJUM, highlighting the presence of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes Against Women where aggressors can be reported. It should be noted that a 24/7 service was put into operation and a WhatsApp number, available to all women, was enabled.

“So far, we have benefited over 2,250 women by providing them with over 15,000 types of services. We have managed to improve their quality of life and their children’s through psychological assistance, consultancy, and judicial representation, social work, recreational areas, empowerment, and linking them with several institutions,” Marina del Pilar stated.

This data represents a growth of 735% in comparison with 2019, the year CEJUM was inaugurated where around 300 women were assisted.

The governor highlighted the installation of the Hearing Room Specialized in Domestic Violence Against Women, in coordination with the Judicial Branch of the State and its head, Alejandro Isaac Fragozo López. This is the first room that has been created in the state in more than 12 years, which has managed to hold over 50 hearings between the months of August and October.

For her part, the head of CEJUM, Magdalena Bautista, highlighted the creation of the House of Transit, a warm and safe place for women and their children who have been victims of extreme domestic violence. So far, the integrity and lives of hundreds of people have been saved thanks to this place.

"We created a computation room, tools that are very useful for users to enable their academic and economic empowering process, as well as giving them access to justice,” Bautista said, who also spoke about the opening of a Lactation Room; a private, hygienic, and comfortable place where women can breastfeed in warm and safe conditions.

It should be noted that the Center for the Justice of Women has specialized staff, with a gender perspective and a focus on human rights to assist women who have been victims of violence, as well as their children. Just in this current administration, more than 379 investigation files and 29 family reports have been opened in coordination with FGE. In 10 months, more than 70 cases have gone to court.
