Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda has stated that her objective is to strengthen the transformation process in Mexicali’s mobility. She, along with the XXIV Mexicali Municipal Administration led by mayor Norma Alicia Bustamante Martínez, signed the “Impulso a la Movilidad en Mexicali” (Boosting Mobility in Mexicali) agreement.

This document has a series of joint actions that will boost the modernization of transportation, streamline traffic flows in streets, and make the city more habitable and have a greater quality of life. This agreement was signed at the state’s executive branch facilities.

In her speech, Ávila Olmeda highlighted the work by municipal authorities regarding this matter and stated that the government of Baja California has carried out a series of judicial reforms so as to make people the focal point of this mobility policy. This is already a part of the three main pillars of the 2022-2027 State Development Plan (PED). The governor stated that these agreements have been signed with other municipalities.

She also stated that the Institute of Sustainable Urban Mobility (IMOS) is comprised of a work team that has strengthened the institution, through a series of norm updates and by maintaining comprehensive dialogue with transportation drivers of each of the state’s municipalities. She likewise highlighted the work carried out by the Municipal Transportation System of Mexicali (SIMUTRA) since the Mexicali transportation system has been recognized as one of the best in the country.

“We changed the vision of what was possible with mobility as a policy solely focused on a vision of development. We shared this vision with IMOS: a vision of sustainable development to have friendlier cities that have people as their main focal point,” she underscored.

For his part, IMOS head Jorge Alberto Gutiérrez Topete spoke about the new General Mobility and Road Security Law, which constitutes a clear idea of new mobility priorities in the country and the world, which are centering the most vulnerable people such as pedestrians and cyclists.

“Public transportation is a very important mobility element, but it is not the only thing. There is a lot to do regarding universal mobility, sustainable mobility, and public spaces. This is why we are happy to sign this collaboration agreement today where we are looking to boost sustainable, inclusive, and safe mobility for all people of Mexicali,” the state official stated.
