Avocado reaches unaffordable prices in Tijuana. Families are spending up to $20 dollars for the green gold!

Avocado is now priced at $8 dollars in this border city

In Tijuana, Baja California, avocado prices have risen exponentially reaching almost $160 Mexican pesos ($8 dollars) per kilogram in several supermarkets in the city. Due to rising prices, this fruit is now considered “green gold” by people who keep buying this product ”normally” according to Agua Caliente Smart & Final employees.

A Smart & Final employee stated:

People come and purchase up to $400 pesos ($20 dollars) of avocado and it is selling normally.

According to the Secretariat of Economy the avocado price increase is due to lack of production and inflation nationwide; a considerable change has been observed compared to 2021 prices. Last year, avocado was sold in prices ranging from $50 to 60 Mexican pesos ($2.50 - $3.00 dollars). In 2022, it has increased beyond $100 pesos.

According to the Metropolitan Center of Economic and Business Information (CEMDI) , Tijuana is currently ranked fifth nationwide in highest annual inflation rate with 9.02%, on a list with 42 Mexican municipalities.

It should be noted that according to the Federal Consumer Agency (PROFECO), Tijuana has one of the 5 most expensive supermarkets in northern Mexico: Soriana Súper at Colonia Libertad, where the basic basket is almost $1,000 pesos.

Even though the price of avocado has increased beyond $100 Mexican pesos in several supermarkets, there are other marts, supply centers, and fruit and vegetable stands one can get a kilo of avocado for less than $100 pesos.
