Baja Californian Governor, Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, in cooperation with Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, Historical and Cultural Memory of Mexico Counselor, led together Fandangos por la Lectura (Fandangos for Reading) in Tijuana. This event was a joint project between the Government of Mexico and the Uruguayan Embassy to spread interesting in reading among Mexicans.

This event took place at the Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT) terrace and had several musical and artistic numbers of both Mexican and Uruguayan culture, as well as a collective reading out loud with Tijuana native secondary school students.

In her message, the governor recognized the work that Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller has carried out to rescue the Historical and Cultural Memory of Mexico, especially when regarding the culture and values of the nation, taking them to every corner of our country.

She also encouraged young Baja Californian people to stay close to reading, to open their horizons and improve their lives so as to acquire knowledge and values so that they can open their doors to imagination, which also means leaving behind any kind of violence.

“As Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller says: books talk to us and while we are reading in peace, a book is the most powerful soul that a nation has to live in peace”, the Baja Californian governor said during her speech at the ceremony.

Due to this, she said that Baja California is firmly committed when it comes to reading and bringing the arts to those who have been historically marginalized. This is why the State Reading Promotion Program “Cinco Por Año” will be launched coordinating and harmoniously with the National Reading Strategy.

She stated:

This program will manage to assist the population at large, focusing especially in the most vulnerable groups. It will be promoted at DIF shelters, children’s shelters, shelters for women who have been victims of violence, immigrant shelters, and elderly homes. We want there to be books in each of these spaces.

At the event, the following people were present: Alejandra Frausto Guerrero, Mexico’s Secretary of Culture; Laura Elena Carrillo Cubillas, Executive Director of AMEXID; Rabindranath Salazar Solorio, Subsecretary of Democratic Development, Social Participantion, and Religious Issues; singer Edwin Luna; and Uruguayan ambassador in Mexico, Aníbal Cabral Segalerba.

Secretary of Culture of Baja California, Alma Delia Ábrego Ceballos; writer Florentino Solano, and Yadira Mateos González, National Prize of Youth in Baja California were also present at the event.
