Soriana at Colonia Libertad has one of the most expensive basic baskets in all of northern Mexico

PROFECO revealed this information during the morning press conference where Tijuana appears on the list once again

On Monday, April 11, the head of the Federal Consumer Agency (PROFECO), Ricardo Sheffield Padilla, revealed the current prices of the basic basket in the four regions of Mexico. These are updated weekly and in the latest one, a supermarket in Tijuana has dropped to fifth place among the most expensive in the northern Mexico area.

The northern area of the country consists of the states of Baja California, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, Sonora, and Tamaulipas with Nuevo Leon being first place with the supermarket with the most expensive basic basket at $999.95 pesos at Soriana Híper.

On the other hand, Tijuana is still among the first places of this list as Soriana Súper is ranked fifth place, specifically the one located at Rampa Ruiz Cortínez s/n in Colonia Libertad, with a total amount of $950.60 pesos for basic basket products.

According to PROFECO, the basic basket in Mexico consists of 21 items that are enough to feed a family of 4 people for one week. These products are the following:

  • Canola or corn oil 1 bottle of 946 ml.
  • Rice grains 1 kg.
  • Brown sugar 1 kg.
  • Beefsteak 1 kg.
  • Onion 1 kg.
  • Jalapeño pepper 1 kg.
  • Pork chops 1 kg.
  • Beans 900 grs.
  • White chicken eggs 1 package with 18 eggs
  • Soap 1 piece
  • Tomatoes 1 kg.
  • Limes 1 kg.
  • Apples 1 kg.
  • Oranges 1 kg.
  • Bread 1 package of 680 grs.
  • Potatoes 1 kg.
  • Toilet paper 1 bag with 4 pieces
  • Soup pasta 1 package of 220 grs.
  • Whole chicken 1 kg.
  • Corn tortillas 4kg.
  • Carrots 1 kg.

It should be noted that among these basic basket products, serrano pepper was changed for jalapeño pepper, since the latter has had a price drop in comparison to the former. This is the kind of things that are analyzed weekly in regards to the basic basket prices in all of Mexico.
