Americans prefer Tijuana's gas: they cross the border to fill up their tanks

Shell’s gas prices have reached up to $6.19 dollars

The price of gas in San Diego is still breaking records. While the national gallon average is around $4.43 dollars, in this California city you may find it in some gas stations, such as Shell, at $6.19 dollars, i.e., $1.76 more expensive. One of the greatest factors that contributes to this price increase is Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

This increase in prices is also reflected in the neighbor city of Tijuana, since more and more Americans are preferring to cross to this side of the border to fill up on cheaper gas. Something like this has never been seen, since it is usually Tijuana natives the ones that are crossing to San Diego to get gas.

Despite this, this has changed, since in the last few days Tijuana has seen an increase of Americans filling up their tanks. This was confirmed by the San Diego Red team after visiting a few busy gas stations of the city such as the ones located in Boulevard Cuauhtémoc Sur and another one in Boulevard Agua Caliente.

Chevron gas station, located in Boulevard Agua Caliente, has confirmed that since last weekend a great number of Americans have come to get gas. According to them, this is normal because they are close to the gastronomic area of Colonia Juárez, also known as “La Cacho”. What the employees highlight, however, is that the tourists are now filling up their tanks.

Likewise, members of the gas station Akron, located in Boulevard Cuauhtémoc, stated that cars with American license plates have been coming all the time: “With how the situation is there, they seem to prefer coming here.” Just like with the previous gas station, they mentioned that though the number of cars hasn’t increased, the new thing is that more people are filling up their tanks.

It should be noted that, according to Chevron, gas prices are $21.99 pesos for regular and $24.19 for premium. This means that fuel is almost $1.80 cents per gallon cheaper in Tijuana than San Diego. This is strange since, historically, gas has always been cheaper in the US side of the border.
