Governor Marina del Pilar restores abandoned schools in Baja California

Every week, INIFE will assist more than 30 schools in the seven municipalities of the state

In order to help all students go back to in-person classes in Baja California, Baja Californian Governor, Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, stated that restoration work will be strengthened in schools which the Secretariat of Education determined were not favorable to have students. This is so that girls, boys, and young people are able to go back to classrooms as soon as possible in ideal conditions.

During her visit to elementary school “Xochicalli”, located in Colonia Xochicalli, the Governor stated that the number of schools that were deemed as not favorable to return due to vandalism was 185. 72 of these have been restored, while the rest will be attended this month.

The Governor put as an example the very same school she was visiting that had been damaged due to vandalism. Now, it has a lunchroom, restored restrooms, and other elements that will make it ideal for students to go back to classes next March 14.

In her tour, Marina del Pilar was accompanied by the head of the Physical Educational Infrastructure Institute of Baja California (INIFE), Javier Urbalejo Cinco, who said that activities are being carried out in all seven municipalities so that all schools are ready.

He also revealed that several construction and restoration activities are planned during the summer, in order to take advantage of vacations to create the spaces that girls, boys, and young people need to develop fully in their educational environment.

Meanwhile, Xochicalli primary school principal, Miriam Martínez, emphasized the importance that parents’ participation has in supporting work that makes it easier for their children to go back to class, which is why this is a matter in which being together has strengthened accomplishing common goals.

Urbalejo Cinco stated that restoration of electrical and sanitary systems was carried out in this primary school and, together with other construction activities such as a new lunchroom, required an investment of 150,000 pesos.

Lastly, Marina del Pilar explained that all schools will be reviewed and assisted, since the state government is determined to have students back in school, since it is an essential and vital matter considering that it has been almost two years when in-person activities were stopped due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
