In this episode of Una Mordida Tacos Tijuana, our host, Chef Danny Betancourt, went to Tacos Varios “Yuritzy” located in Calle Santa Verónica, in Colonia Agua Caliente. This time he was able to try two tacos: a chile relleno (stuffed pepper) taco and a meat tortita taco. Both are priced at $1.25 dollars (25 pesos).
Meat Tortita Taco
This is a stew that is not common to see in varied tacos stands. It has shredded beef battered in green sauce drenched eggs, a bed of rice, a bed of beans, all served in two corn tortillas. When he took his first bite, Chef Danny noticed how heavy this taco was, due to the weight of the rice and bean bed and the sauce’s humidity, and this was causing the tortillas to start to break.
When he took his second bite, Chef Danny switched sides, for he had eaten an entire meat tortita on the first. The tortilla had a strong corn flavor and was soft. The rice had a strange viscous consistency, as if it had been in a lot of water. The sauce wasn’t too spicy or acidic, which is perfect for this kind of stew, which tend to be quite dry due to their cooking and battering processes. Because of all of this, this taco gets a rating of 7.1.

Stuffed Pepper Taco
This is one of the most popular and common stews in varied tacos stands. This particular taco has a pepper battered in egg and Jack cheese stuffing, a bed of rice, a bed of beans, and two corn tortillas. Chef Danny also decided to add some pickled purple onions. Our host decided not to add sauce because the pickled onions added the acidity that the taco needed.
The pepper’s flavor was quite good as well as its softness. The Jack cheese loses a bit of its taste by being fried, since its buttermilk dissipates, so Chef Danny had to take another bite to perceive more of its flavor. Generally speaking, the stew’s flavor was quite good, but, once again, the tortilla was the weak point, for it broke with just one bite, and some of its spots felt hard. This is why this taco gets a rating of 6.8.
