On February 10, 2022, Mexican President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, revealed in his morning press conference that he will tour the US-Mexico border states of Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, and Baja California.
The main issue of this visit will be customs offices and security in these zones that are so important for cross-border relations. The objective is to safeguard tourists as well as people who travel in between the border to carry out proceedings and paperwork.
“We are carrying out a restructuring of all systems related to migration and customs, so that we can give tourists and visitors the attention they deserve. We don’t want any extortions, and we don’t want to waste anyone’s time. We want all proceedings to be carried out swiftly and, of course, we want to avoid corruption and smuggling,” stated President López Obrador.
It is important that customs are not controlled by organized or “white collar” crime, he claimed. That is why customs will be managed by both the Secretariat of Defense and the Secretariat of the Navy.
The president will tour the northern Mexican customs next week. The cities he will visit, according to Horacio Duarte Olivares, Head of the National Mexican Customs Agency, will be: Tijuana, Nogales, Ciudad Juárez, and Nuevo Laredo.
