Three people, the alleged perpetrators of the death of journalist Lourdes Maldonado, were arrested last Tuesday night in Tijuana. The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, revealed that the detention of the suspects for the crime of homicide had been carried out and they had been presented before the authorities.
"According to the investigations, there has been a timely follow-up to each of the evidences that allowed arrest warrants, persecution acts, and search warrants to be issued before the supervisory judge," she mentioned.
During his morning press conference, Mexican President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, revealed the news, assuring that investigations had been followed through to solve this crime. The president stated:
We are glad, though it is a very unfortunate case. We cannot bring anybody back to life, but we are obligated to have justice in this country and not let impunity run free. That’s why we want to let you know that the people who allegedly murdered journalist Lourdes Maldonado have been detained (…). This task was carried out in cooperation with the federal government. A team from every organization participated, and the participation of the government of the state of Baja California was essential.
For their part, Subsecretary of Security, Ricardo Mejía, said that the motive of the murder has not been determined, which is why the investigation is still open with enquiries, interviews, and processes being undertaken by the Judicial Branch, so that the crime can be solved soon.
The three perpetrators were riding a taxi, it was revealed during the morning presidential conference. They were located due to records of several security cameras.
