The Governor of Baja California, Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda, condemned the murder of journalist Lourdes Maldonado López on Sunday, January 23, in the city of Tijuana, as well as the case of photojournalist Margarito Martnez Esquivel, stating that the state's full force will be used to ensure that justice is served.
In a video posted to her social media accounts, the Baja California president stated that "no one will be permitted to take away the calm of the families so that they may live a complete and dignified life every day." All forms of violence are abhorrent."
"Aggressions against the press are an assault against the voice of all people," she claimed, since it is even more appalling when fatal violence is used against those who work to make the truth a fundamental value of our lives in society.
Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda indicated that she will give prompt follow-up to the deaths of Lourdes and Margarito, for which she will work closely with Attorney General Ricardo Carpio Sánchez and the Secretary of State Citizen Security, led by General Gilberto Landeros Briseo.
The Governor of Baja California wants to ensure the safety and security of the whole journalistic community and society in general, therefore she requested prosecutor Carpio to designate a special prosecutor who would lead an elite panel that will investigate both instances and settle them as quickly as possible.
Likewise, continual connection has been established with the Mexican government and Tijuana municipal authorities in order to get federal troops' cooperation and collaborate in whatever manner is required for stated aims.
"I want to reassure the families of Margarito and Lourdes that they are not alone," he stated. "They have my full support and solidarity in these trying times."
Finally, the Governor sent a statement to the state's media, expressing his commitment to work hand in hand with them to put in place the necessary measures to guarantee that their profession is practiced freely and securely, as well as appealing for unity among everyone to seal the door to violence.
