The reopening of the border has been a reality since November 8, when non-essential travel to the United States was allowed as long as individuals could present proof that they had been vaccinated with biologics against Covid-19 that had been approved by the World Health Organization and the CDC.

Although these rules apply to passengers who undertake non-essential crossings, Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of the United States Department of Homeland Security, reminded that essential travelers must also prepare with immunization tests as of January 2022.

The following individuals are deemed essential passengers by Customs and Border Protection:
Legal Permanent Residents and Citizens, It's time to return to the United States.
Those who need to travel for medical reasons (for example, to receive medical treatment in the United States).
Individuals who travel to educational institutions to attend classes.
People who migrate to the United States to work (for example, people who work in the agricultural industry must travel between the United States and Canada or Mexico to promote such work).
Individuals traveling for the sake of public health and emergency response (for example, government officials or first responders entering the United States to support federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial government efforts to respond to COVID -19 or other emergencies).
Individuals who participate in legitimate cross-border commerce (truck drivers who support cargo movement between the United States and Canada and Mexico).
People who are taking part in official government or diplomatic visits.
People who are involved in military travel or activities.

He made this remark on Tuesday, December 7, during a visit to the San Ysidro crossing, when he had a brief news conference with San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, during which they addressed matters such as the border, individuals seeking political asylum, and the MPP program, among other things.

When discussing the reopening of the border, both authorities stated that the reactivation of the economy for both countries had become a reality, as evidenced by the hundreds of visitors, citizens, and residents who cross between the two countries daily. Mayorkas further highlighted that they are working on ways to reduce the time people have to wait at checkpoints.
