Hugo López-Gatell, Undersecretary of Health in Mexico, promised that the anti-COVID vaccine will reach minors between 12 and 17 years of age.
In an interview with La Jornada, the official indicated that those in this age range who suffer from extreme obesity, cancer, renal or hepatic insufficiency, HIV, some congenital diseases and respiratory insufficiency are contemplated within the COVID-19 vaccination scheme, as they are considered at risk of suffering from the severe form of the disease.
He alluded to the fact that statistically there are a little less than 1 million people in Mexico.
But in minors without comorbidities that produce a higher risk of severe COVID, there is no scientific consensus at this time that it is necessary or significantly useful to vaccinate them.
López-Gatell referred to studies carried out by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Center for Disease Control (CDC) of Europe and the United States, the Public Health Agency of Canada, England and Australia to support his opinion.
He said he does not resist the appeals, as long as they meet the criteria within the group eligible to receive the Pfizer vaccine.
However, he said that this may change at a later date if scientific data suggest it.
At the moment he has not confirmed when they will start vaccinating minors in this range and with these comorbidities.
Finally, he spoke about the third dose of the vaccine, referring to the fact that, according to immunology specialist Anthony Fauci, there is no conclusive evidence that it is required.
