Baja California will be the first Mexican state to achieve herd immunity

Because it is the first Mexican state to apply vaccine to citizens 18 and older, it could also be the first to achieve herd immunity

This Thursday the vaccination campaign began in Baja California: a total of one million 350 thousand doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccines donated by the U.S. government were sent to this Mexican state in order to speed up the application of vaccines and open the border with Mexico more quickly.

For this reason, the vaccination was opened for people 18 years of age and older, so according to the Secretary of Health of the region, Alonso Pérez Rico, Baja California will be the first to complete its vaccination schedule and obtain herd immunity; only yesterday more than 196 thousand were vaccinated with Johnson & Johnson.

In addition, the arrival of the vaccines has been very well received by citizens, particularly in Tijuana, long lines could be observed at all vaccination points and although they were long, people also stated that they were advancing quickly.

Antonio G. commented to San Diego Red that: "the explanations were very clear and you could really see the organization in the vaccination process, the line was moving very fast and most, if not all, were registering from home".

This strategy, which has been made possible thanks to the U.S. government, is fundamental for the reopening of the border, something that Mexicans with tourist visas, as well as U.S. merchants along the border have been waiting for more than a year.

For his part, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressed that it is important to vaccinate the population of the 39 municipalities that make up the border, while Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard pointed out that this will facilitate trade, tourism and travel.
