The San Diego County District Attorney’s office has charged National City Treasurer Mitchel Beauchamp with multiple counts of animal cruelty and other misdemeanors, court records show.
The six counts, which carry $1,000 fines or sentences of 90 days to a year, include animal cruelty, unlawful removal of game, unlawful trapping and harassment of animals, according to a complaint dated April 9.
Beauchamp’s lawyer, Thomas Warwick, said Monday he had no comment on the charges. Beauchamp did not immediately respond to an email and voicemail.
The alleged cruelty happened between June 19, 2017, and August 1, 2017. Prosecutors say Beauchamp did “maliciously and intentionally maim, mutilate, torture, wound and kill an animal,” which is a misdemeanor.
Other charges include violations of the state’s Fish & Game Code, such as unlawfully trapping skunks and opossums.
The complaint does not say how many animals were killed or how.
Beauchamp previously served as a National City council member from 1994 to 2002 and is a trained botanist who owns a natural resource consultant company called Pacific Southwest Biological Services, according to his bio.
