Tokyo, Japan delighted the entire world with a wonderful presentation at the Closing Ceremonies for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. It was a show that embraced significant elements of both its traditional and new pop culture, as well as heavy use of technology. If you don't believe us, just ask Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Visually speaking, Japan will probably bring us one of the best Olympic Games of all time by 2020, but another exciting novelty will be the inclusion of new sports that we never thought could be part of this global competition.
According to ShareAmerica, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted to add Surf, Sport Climbing, Karate, Baseball, Softball and Skateboarding to the roster of sports for 2020. If you're a extreme sports fan, you'll know that these kind of disciplines are only part of the X Games, but the renewed Olympics will take inspiration from it and get them to another level.
In Tokyo 2020, skateboarders will compete in two categories, "Street" and "Park." The Street category will have rails, stands, steps, benches and so on, while "Park" will have an air style area with concave shaped cement stages that will allow competitors show their skills to the judges.
Skateboarding will count with the participation of 80 athletes: 40 men, and 40 women. "I've always believed that if this discipline was properly supported and protected, its presence at the Olympics could change the world," said Gary Ream, President of the International Federation of Skateboarding.
