British actor Kenny Baker, best known for his role of R2-D2 in all 6 Star Wars films, has died.
According to a statement from Baker's niece, the actor died after an illness that he already had for a long time. He was 83.
His niece, Abigail Shield, said his death was expected, but not painful.
"lt was expected, but it's sad nonetheless. He had a very long and fulfilled life. He brought lots of happiness to people and we'll be celebrating the fact that he was well loved throughout the world. We're all very proud of what he achieved in his lifetime."
Baker became R2-D2 for the first time in 1977 with the first Star Wars movie, now known as Episode IV: A New Hope. In addition to this famous and beloved droid, the actor had important roles in The Goonies and Flash Gordon.
