Tourists and residents of Tijuana are gathering at Avenida Revolución between Calle 8 and Calle 9 to try out the several different flavors and scents of agave liquors in the 1st Edition of Expo Agave 2023.
Tijuana is now the venue of one of Mexico’s most popular drinks in the world: agave distilled beverages. At 1 PM, hundreds of attendants will enrich their lives and culture thanks to the several different liquors that will be here, whose production process in many cases has been handed down through many generations.
After the symbolic inauguration ribbon cutting ceremony, Mario Alberto Murrieta, managing director of this event, spoke about the goal of this exhibition which is to promote and boost ancestral agave culture and to try out the several different scents and flavors here while spending time with family.
This exhibition has gathered a great variety of mezcal, tequila, sotol, bacanora, and raicilla drinks. Some of these drinks and brands are coming to Tijuana after being internationally awarded as distinguished distilled beverage makers. Such is the case with mezcal El Hábito, or the craft liquor Mujeres, which was awarded gold and silver medals in 2021 due to the quality of its product.
This exhibition is also helping the public to learn about other liquors besides mezcal and tequila. One example of this is bacanora, which is made in Sonora and obtained from a specific agave called espadín or yaquiana. Brands such as Sto. Domingo or Sunora Bacanora, are offering attendants a different kind of agave, with scents and intensities derived from this plant.
Other brands are also being exhibited such as Los Potrillos which sells sotol from the city of Aldama or Sotoleros, which sells sotol from Chorreras, and which are both from the state of Chihuahua. Without a doubt, the novelty at 1st Edition of Expo Agave 2023 was the liquor lechuguilla, from the brand Cumbrita de la Sierra, whose soft and cooling flavor is perfect for these summer days.
Expo Agave 2023 was also accompanied with delicious Mexican gastronomy. With a diverse menu, attendants will be able to enjoy Mexican snacks such as huaraches, tortas, and tamales, and other things such as burgers, tortas, chicken wings, all accompanied with natural flavor drinks.
On Saturday, July 15 one of the most important cultural performances of this exhibition will take place: the staging of the Goddess of Agave: "Mayahuel", which will be done with indigenous dancing. This show will begin at 5:30 PM.
