For lovers of massive events, tasters of agave byproducts, and the public at large, the first edition of Expo Agave will arrive in Tijuana in July, by the creators of Expo Artesanal and Expo Tequila.
Mario Murrieta is the director of this 100% family friendly event and explained that due to the success of Expo Tequila, local and US visitors asked for more agave liquors, which is why in Expo Agave you’ll find: bacanora, mezcal, tequila, sotol, and raicilla.
From July 13 to July 16 from 1 PM to 11 PM at Avenida Revolución, between Calle 8 and 9, Tijuana natives and foreigners will be able to visit 65 stands: 8 gastronomic stands, and 57 stands of brands which will offer their agave-derived drinks.

Some of these brands are not that well known in Tijuana, which is why some of the goals of this event are to raise awareness, create business opportunities, and give people information, specifically, about the differences between the different drinks derived from agave.
In addition, for those who don’t want to taste pure drinks, there will be a mixology stand where you will find high-quality mixed drinks.
In the gastronomic area, visitors will be able to buy Mexican snacks such as huaraches, marrow tacos, and many more culinary surprises.

There will be a general information stand, where highly qualified people will use a miniature of the event to resolve all visitors’ questions.
There will also be several musical performances to lighten up the mood of the event.

The first edition of Expo Agave will take place from July 13 to July 16 from 1 PM to 11 PM. It will be located at Avenida Revolución, between Calle 8 and 9.
Despite the sales of alcoholic drinks, this event will be family friendly. Admission for adults will cost $130 pesos or $7.5 dollars; admission for children will be completely free.

What is so special about agave?
It is a plant with several different variations that mainly grows in Mexico. From its stem or “pineapple”, 9 different drinks can be distilled. Here’s a brief description of the drinks you’ll find at Expo Agave:

Tequila
Between 35% and 55% alcohol content
The most popular drink is tequila which is mainly made in the town of Tequila, Jalisco. This drink is around 500 years old, and people tend to drink it with lime and salt.
Mezcal
Between 35% and 55% alcohol content
Though mezcal is a little less popular, it is an older and more traditional drink. It is 2,400 years old, from when Pre-Hispanic cultures dominated these lands. The state of Oaxaca is the main maker of this liquor.
Bacanora
Between 38% and 42% alcohol content
Bacanora comes from Sonora and it is a drink that was illegal for more than 70 years, until the 1990s when its trade was regulated.
Sotol
Between 38% and 55% alcohol content
Sotol is a drink from Chihuahua and it is made from the agave that also has the same name. It grows like a desert palm tree and it shows hundreds of main ribs in a more “uncombed” way.
Raicilla
Between 36% and 45% alcohol content
Raicilla is a type of mezcal made from different agave plants. It is mainly made at Sierra Madre Occidental and in northern Jalisco.

As there are different types of agave and different distillation processes, each drink is different when it comes to its flavor, consistency, and ethylic content, which means that each of these drinks will make your palate experience something completely unique.
