Baja California students are expected to return to the classroom in September, however, after the pilot test conducted by the Federal High School Lazaro Cardenas (PFLC) on May 31 in Tijuana, it was questioned whether the rest of the schools could do it.

For his part, the head of the Secretariat of Health of the State, Alonso Pérez Rico, said that only those that have the letter of No Inconvenience issued by this agency can do it. To do so, they can go and propose their protocol to the health authorities so that it can be reviewed and later they will be notified about its viability.

Regarding the PFLC, he commented that since it is a vaccination center and at the request of the director of this campus, it was verified that it did have the safety and health protocols for an on-site return to classes, allowing it to carry out a test stage.

Another institution that adheres to the protocol guidelines requested by the Secretariat and that has already received the letter of No Inconvenience is the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC), said Pérez Rico.

"We are not opening all the schools, only those that have the letter of No Inconvenience from the Secretariat of Health. And we want to start the pilots so that eventually, when we return, because we are going to return to on-site classes, we will already have the arguments and the experience of having managed schools with on-site classes and be able to reduce the possibility of originating chains of transmission," he added.

And although UABC is authorized to return to face-to-face classes, its Mexicali campus is the only one that will not be able to do so, the Secretary indicated: "Mexicali does not initiate any version of anything, educational campuses".

Although he did not give details on the latter, let us remember that the Mexicali region is where more active cases of COVID-19 are currently being reported, even at a national level.

"I want to be very clear, any school that opens right now has been instructed by the highest health authority of the State of Baja California, who is the head of the executive branch, to close the school. Please approach the Secretariat of Health before making this decision," concluded Pérez Rico.
