January: Deadliest month for Mexico and the United States due to COVID-19

The countries rank third and first, respectively, on the list of nations with the highest number of coronavirus fatalities

January has come to an end and although for some nations the pandemic is beginning to be controlled, for others the situation is becoming increasingly serious, as evidenced by the cases of Mexico and the United States, countries that recorded the highest mortality rate caused by COVID-19 so far in the pandemic last month.

While in Mexico there were around 32 thousand 729 deaths in total, in the United States there were more than 95 thousand deaths, giving a total of approximately 127 thousand 729 deaths in both countries. According to the Mexican Ministry of Health, of the 158 thousand 536 deaths registered since March of last year, it was in January when the mortality rate increased on a large scale, causing the country to document that at least 1 out of every 5 deaths of the total so far occurred in the first month of the year.

It was also recorded that the average number of deaths in the last 30 days was one thousand and 56 per day, far exceeding the 19 thousand and 867 total deaths in the month of December throughout its 31 days.

With respect to the neighboring country to the north, the number of deaths due to the pandemic in the United States currently amounts to 440 thousand, with a daily average of 3 thousand 150 deaths, registering its maximum mortality in mid-January.

And although at the end of the month there was a decrease in the number of hospitalizations and infections had a magnificent drop from 250 thousand to 148 thousand (which, although not a very small number, is a very noticeable advance in the fight against the coronavirus disease), Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that such advances are overshadowed by the many deaths recorded in the previous 31 days.

A few days ago, Mexico surpassed India and joined the United States in the "top 3" countries with the most deaths recorded so far during the pandemic. Currently, the United States leads the list with a total of 442 million, adding one thousand 875 deaths in the last 24 hours, while Mexico remains in the number 3 place with 159 thousand, plus 462 deaths that happened yesterday.
