TIJUANA. - With the goal of positioning Baja California on the world map as a culinary and oenological tourist destination, the Secretary of Tourism (Secretaría de Turismo [SECTURE] in Spanish) helped with the nomination of the state in Spain's International Tourism Trade Fair.
The state's Secretary of Tourism director, Óscar Jesús Escobedo Carignan, said that the participation is for the XXI edition of the Best Product in Active Tourism category that is organized annually by the Spanish magazine AireLibre, within the International Tourism Trade Fair (Feria Internacional de Turismo [FITUR] in Spanish) program, which is the most important event of its kind in the world.
"The fact that Baja California is participating in this type of event for the first time is something that makes us very proud, it shows all of the work and progress that the government and private sector has achieved together in this area", he said.
He also added "Baja Wine Tours", which happens to be one of the most established tour operators of the region, submitted their tour to the international oenological tourism category. This tour company has received important awards in the past, among them is the "Best Tourism Product" award and in 2014 and 2015 with their tours "Ruta del Vino Premium" and "Tijuana Gourmet" respectively, in the Tourism Market (Tianguis Turístico in Spanish) tour category, which is the most important tourism fair in Mexico.
"In our Fair submission we united two of our tours into one, in order to include Tijuana's culinary sector, plus the Wine Route's enological offer so that we could present the most iconic features of the region, which we consider represents perfectly well what Baja California has to offer to its visitors", he said.
He also informed that the jury will consist of 30% of AireLibre magazine readers, who will vote online, 30% by tourism professionals who will serve as exhibitors, 10% by the media and the last 30% by tourism sector representatives.
The owner of "Baja Wine Tours", Dora Luz Villarino León, added that close to 80 projects from multiple countries were submitted and that this is the first time Baja California will participate.
"We are sure we'll do pretty well, Baja California is increasingly important in the international scope and what we at "Baja Wine Tours" are looking for is to have even more recognition", she concluded.
The winner will be announced on January 15, 2016 and the awards will be given by the International Tourism Trade Fair.
