If there is one thing that distinguishes Mamut Brewery in downtown Tijuana, is that they are always willing to experiment with new things. From a wide variety of beers to urban wine, the newest member to join Mamut's family is mezcal. Under the name Mezcali, this has become the newest extension of the brewery, focusing on the traditional Mexican beverage.
With a wide selection of mezcal brought directly from the state of Oaxaca, Mezcali is born as a dream project from the mind of Juan Jose Quezada, master brewer and owner of Mamut, who has taking a liking and passion for said beverage wanting to share it with his clients.
After taking a mezcal taster course (or mezcalier, how the jokingly name it), they started to bring the beverage to Tijuana and little by little introduced it to their menu. However, given that mezcal is a generous and varied beverage, they needed a space completely dedicated to it, and that's exactly what Mezcali is, creating a extension of the brewery with a specialized bar where we can find all kinds of mezcal, from Espadines reposados, Tobalas, different assembles of the same product and even some distilled ones such as Bacanora. Of course, each and every one of the drinks comes with a description in order for its drinker to understand a little more about the beverage.
Something that caught my attention is that many of these mezcals can only be found among Oaxaca's ranches and are of very limited production, making the Mezcali experience something very pleasant on many different levels, especially due to the authenticity of the beverages, and thus becoming a must for anyone who want to try something different in Tijuana.
Mezcali is located in Mamut Brewery at Calle 3ra , #8161, Zona Centro, C.P. 2200, Tijuana, Baja California (click here for directions). Open Monday through Tuesday from 1:00 pm to 11:00 pm. Friday and Saturday from 1:00 pm to 12:00 am. For more information visit their official page.
