Tijuana’s Insurgente Brewery Opens New Factory

A celebration with good music, food and of course excellent beer

This past Saturday Insurgente Brewery, undoubtedly one of the best craft brewers in Tijuana and Mexico, christened their new facilities in the company of Tijuana’s brewing royalty offering their line of four beers and some great surprises.

With local cumbia rock band la Diabla setting the festive mood and tasty dishes from The Lunchbox food truck the guests enjoyed a fun time and literally a bottomless keg of Insurgente Beer. The purpose of the event was to introduce Insurgente’s new production facilities that increased their capacity from thirty one gallons per batch to four hundred and sixty five gallons. Because of this I can gladly assume there will be a lot more Insurgente beer for many more thirsty people in Mexico and beyond. Insurgente is presently sold in Tijuana, Ensenda, Mexicali, Monterrey, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Morelia and a few more cities. Looking to the future Insurgente is presently in talks to export their beer to California before the end of the year. This will definitely help Tijuana and Mexico’s craft beer scene to continue making inroads in new markets.

The production facilities are the beginning of what will be a full-fledged restaurant with a roof terrace to better enjoy Tijuana’s great weather and delicious beer and were designed by Carlos Hernandez and Barbara Leon from Heleo architecture studio. The restaurant area should be ready to receive customers in mid-2015.

Ivan and Damian Morales who are business partners and brothers have been perfecting their four beers since October 2010. Insurgente’s line-up includes their Brown, Tiniebla, Nocturna and what is many beer drinkers favorite La Lupulosa and on this night they flowed like water among a river of very happy guests.

La Lupulosa, an IPA, has won gold and silver medals the last two years at Mexico’s premier craft beer convention Cerveza Mexico. Their Brown has a silver medal and La Nocturna, an American black ale, has a bronze medal. In addition to enjoying their flagship beers we were amongst the first people in the world to try their collaboration with San Diego’s Stone Brewery named Chocoveza. The main ingredients that give it a unique taste are coffee, cacao, pasilla peppers, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla. Chocoveza will be sold in forty one states in the U.S. beginning the first couple of weeks of September. Ivan told me that the idea came about at Denver’s World Beer Cup during a conversation with Stone’s Mitch Steele.

To complement their traditional beers Insurgente has produced seasonals like Santa’s Red, No.7 and Saison Chouette as well as special edition creations like Lupulosa Geisha, Ulula and Paja.

To close out the night Damian shared a very short speech which went over very well with the guests who happily continued enjoying what brought us together that night: Top of the line craft beer made in Tijuana. If you have not tasted it stop wasting your time and get your hands on some Cerveza Insurgente.
