Mamut started supporting local artists since its inception. In one year, its growth has been exponential. To celebrate the brewery's anniversary and their new location they are throwing a party with the latin-synth duo Sonidero Travesura. The music duo will be celebrating their 6th year of making music together and will present their second album, The Exotic Sounds of TJ. Mamut will be brewing a special beer just for the occasion in Sonidero's honor.
The beer remains a mystery. Juan Jose Quezada from Mamut, would not give me a hint of what he will be serving that night and just told me it was going to be a great surprise.
The album also remains a mystery, as only the people that collaborated on it have listened to it. Dardín Coria, the keyboard player in Sonidero, shares his thoughts on the project during a press conference held on April 9th:
"We used to play cumbia, it was the start, it was what made it the most fun. But we are not interested it on our music to be labeled that way. We decided to call our sound El Tigre Digital (The Digital Tiger), because we are not interested to relate it with something that has already been made. We feel like what we create from our hearts doesn't need to be labeled in any way, we let the people call it whatever they want. With this new album we focused on being musicians and nothing else.
I've learned to separate what cumbia music is as genre but is another what the mood of cumbia is. I like cumbia as a mood, because I like when people drink and dance and have a wonderful time, but it doesn't mean I like the genre. Someone can like heavy rock mood to dress all black and ride a motorcycle, but not the music. Others can like the reggae mood because they like to have dreadlocks and smoke pot, but not the music. We like to mix all sorts of genres, but still provide a comfortable mood where people can dance and have fun."
Both, Juan Jose of Mamut and Dardín of Sonidero Travesura, were fans of each other before even meeting. A natural partnership occurred when the Sonidero duo, Dardín and Omar, became regular patrons of Mamut. The big party is on April 26th, at Mamut's new location on 3rd street and Revolution (Tijuana) $8 with CD included.
