Mexico outdid its best Olympic performance after winning seven medals in London 2012. Soccer, Diving, Archery and Tae Kwon Do were the disciplines that won an award for their country during these summer games.
The Mexican Olympic selection conquered the gold after defeating the Brazilian team two goals to none. Oribe Peralta scored both times for Mexico while the player known as "Hulk" did so for Brazil. This is the first time the Mexican team gets an Olympic medal.
The first silver medal was received in Synchronized 10m Platform Diving by Germán Sánchez and Iván García. The Mexican divers got a score of 468.90 in the competition. This was the first time both athletes appeared in the Olympics.
Paola Espinosa and Alejandra Orozco gave Mexico the second London medal. After scoring 343.32 points and getting left behind by the Chinese competitors, they won silver for the Mexican delegation. With this honor, Paola Espinosa got her name in Mexican sports history by becoming the first female to win a medal during two Olympic Games. Back in Beijing 2008, she competed with Tatiana Ortiz. For Orozco this was her first Olympic participation and she became the second youngest Mexican medalist.
Aída Román conquered the third medal for Mexico in Archery. After losing the final round to Ki Bo Bae, the Mexican archer received the silver award. Both shooters tied after five rounds so the match had to be decided by sudden death, where the South Korean contestan defeated the Mexican athlete.
After winning three out of the four sets, Mexican archer Mariana Avitia won the bronze medal after going against Khatuna Lorig, from the United States. The 18 year old shooter reached the semifinal round where she lost to Aída so she had to go home with the third place.
Diving also got a bronze medal. It was Laura Sánchez who got third position when she beat Italian diver Tania Cagnotto by only 20 hundredths of a point. The Mexican's athlete score was 362.40 while the Italians' was 362.20. China got the 1-2 with Wu Minxia's 414.00 and He Zi's 379.20.
The last medal Mexico was awarded was won by María del Rosario Espinoza who got bronze after dueling Glenhis Hernández, from Cuba in Tae Kwon Do. The Mexican fighter defeated the one from La Habana 4-2 with partials of 0-0, 1-1 and 3-1. Four years ago the Sinaloa native was the Olympic champion. This time she had to settle with the third place medal.
