Mexican authorities stated this Thursday that Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar, captured today, was considered "one of the top leaders" of the Cartel of Sinaloa and a "key member" of that criminal organization.
Moreover, according to the statement read by a military spokesman, Guzmán Salazar was "presumably in charge of handling the assets" of his 55 year old father, head of Sinaloa's Cartel, Joaquín Guzmán Loera also known by moniker "El Chapo".
Joaquín's son, also known as "El Gordo", was presented to the press today wearing a bullet vest and with Kevin Daniel Beltrán Ríos, the other person detained with him by his side.
Guzmán Salazar and Beltrán Ríos were capture today in the municipality of Zapopan, in the western State of Jalisco thanks to "arduous intelligence work" started months ago by the Mexican Navy as well as an "information exchange with American agencies".
At the moment of the arrest, agents seized two rifles, two handguns and four grenades as well as $135,000 US dollars and $295,000 Mexican pesos, both quantities in cash; they also found "many different ID cards with various names" on them.
Guzmán Salazar "is considered one of the main leaders of the Cartel of Sinaloa and a key element inside the criminal organization, not only due to his direct blood relation to its boss known as "El Chapo", but because presumably he is in charge of managing the head leader's assets" adds the document.
The official statement also declares that Guzmán Salazar "was coordinating the operation by which most of the drugs, like cocaine and heroin, were sent to the United States by Sinaloa's Cartel".
"Different sources state that Guzmán Salazar was recently taking charge of the Cartel of Sinaloa" says the document read by José Luis Vergara, Mexico's Navy spokesman, minutes before presenting the seized weaponry and the two prisoners.
Vergara mentioned that both Guzmán Salazar and his mother were considered "key elements" of the Cartel of Sinaloa's drug trafficking operations by the United States.
