The U.S. Department of State has begun to ask Americans to reconsider traveling to Baja California, the region where 4 bodies, 3 of them foreign tourists who were visiting Ensenada, were found.
This warning is part of a traveler's warning for the country that has been active since August 2023. In addition, according to this department's website, violent crime, such as homicides, kidnappings, auto thefts, and robberies are generalized and common in Mexico.
They have also said that employees of the American government are forbidden from going to certain areas in Mexico, as it is more difficult to provide emergency services to Americans that may need it.
Tips from the U.S. Department of State if you're traveling to Mexico
- Keep friends and family informed of your travel plans.
- If separating from a group, share your location with a friend.
- If taking a taxi alone, take a photo of the taxi’s number and/or plate and send it to a friend.
- Use toll roads when you can and do not drive alone or at night.
- Be extra cautious when visiting local bars, nightclubs or casinos.
- Do not wear jewelry or other flashy things.
In addition, enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program is also recommended.
